The Anatomy Shelf: Submission Guidelines
Dear readers,
I am thrilled to announce that The Anatomy Shelf is accepting submissions! I am looking to publish pieces that focus on the body in literature, art, history, or any other context. These can be reviews, essays, poems, art, flash-fiction, non-fiction informative pieces, photography, etc…
If you are interested, please email me at theanatomyshelf@gmail.com to discuss your ideas/submission
Submission Guidelines:
YOU MUST BE THE AUTHOR OF THE WORK YOU SUBMIT: YOU CANNOT SUBMIT ON BEHALF OF SOMEONE ELSE, CLAIM SOMEONE ELSE’S WORK AS YOUR OWN, OR PLAGARISE
COPYRIGHT: YOU MUST RETAIN THE COPYRIGHT OF YOUR OWN WORK
THE ANATOMY SHELF* IS NOT REPONSIBLE FOR CHECKING THE ABOVE NOTES, THE AUTHOR/SUBMITTER IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE.
Please also make it clear your preferred published name
WRITTEN PIECES:
Written pieces should be 1000 words maximum, but there is some flexibility surrounding this. Please email me at theanatomyshelf@gmail.com if you would like to discuss the word limit.
You may also wish to send a short bio (no more than 250 words) to go alongside your piece.
Please submit articles using Harvard referencing system. Here is a guide: https://www.open.ac.uk/library/referencing-and-plagiarism/quick-guide-to-harvard-referencing-cite-them-right
If you are unable to use the Harvard system, please use in-text references (e.g. SURNAME: 0000) Please do NOT use footnotes, and please provide a bullet-pointed bibliography at the end of your piece. It may also be useful to include three or four ‘further reading’ suggestions (if relevant).
You, as the author, are responsible for making sure your piece is edited (spell-check, grammar, correct references etc.). The Anatomy Shelf is not peer-reviewed; therefore, you will have to edit and check the piece yourself.
If you wish to include any images in your piece (maximum of 4), please make sure you have permission to use them (are in the public domain/your own images). As images can become distorted on Microsoft word, please indicate where in your piece you would like the images to go and send images separately in JPEG format (maximum size of 1280 x 1280 (350 KB) in high resolution).
They should be submitted in a word document format (or Mac equivalent etc.) and should be titled as ANATOMYSHELF_YOUR NAME_REVIEW/ESSAY TITLE/OTHER_SUBMISSION
Please send your submissions to: theanatomyshelf@gmail.com
IMAGES:
You, as the author, are responsible for making sure your piece is edited to publishing satisfaction (i.e. correct title spelling etc.)
For image submissions, please make sure you submit your image as a JPEG, titled as ANATOMY SHELF_YOUR NAME_NAME OF IMAGE
JPEGs have a maximum size of 1280 x 1280 (350 KB), and should be in high resolution
Please send your submissions to: theanatomyshelf@gmail.com
The Legal Bits:
Copyright Notice: If you have the copyright to your work then you retain the copyright of your own work (You must own the copyright of your work, for example: if you have already published a piece elsewhere and do not retain the copyright, you must abide by your previous contacts/permissions. The Anatomy Shelf* is not responsible for checking this and the author retains the responsibility of checking etc.) If you own the copyright of your own work, then this means that in the future, if you wish to publish your piece again somewhere else, you may do so!
Once a piece is submitted, you cannot take back your submission. There is a 24-hour cooling-off period which starts at the time you send your email, but after this it will be included if not stated otherwise.
Once an issue has been published, nothing can be changed, amended, or edited.
Your work will be published publicly on The Anatomy Shelf (Theanatomyshelf.substack.com) and will be emailed to subscribers.
The Anatomy Shelf* retains the right to reject/not use any submissions without giving reason.
Please note: your submission may not be published in the next consecutive issue of The Anatomy Shelf as, in addition to word limits on issues, there will be some themed issues which may be more fitting for your piece. You will be notified if/when your piece will be published.
Please send over any links to websites, social media (if appropriate) that you have permission to include in the issue.
If you submit something to The Anatomy Shelf, you agree to these terms.
I look forward to hearing from you!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask! Send any queries to theanatomyshelf@gmail.com
Please also send any items (not submissions) (e.g. CFPs, new book announcements etc) you wish to include to theanatomyshelf@gmail.com or contact me via social media
Thank you,
Best wishes,
Lauren
